Why Having the Safest Hunting Equipment is a Must When Hunting

admin on Mar-31-2011

There are different types of hunting equipment for emergency situations. It includes high quality rifles or hunting weapons, first- aid box, knife and saw, a loud whistle, long rope, cell phones, shelter blankets, marker tapes, plastic bags and adequate food and water. If all these hunting equipment are not carried then the hunting task may prove to be harsh. Another versatile machine used while hunting is ATV’s. Most of the ATV’s have large bodies to store all the hunting equipment. The ATV machine is used because the hunters have to pass through various unpleasant environments which come in the way of hunting.

Hunting can also become a dangerous recreational activity so a hunting weapon should be well-equipped and easy to handle. As it is the most essential hunting equipment, is safety and sound features are important. The hunters should know how to use their weapons and should be fully loaded to avoid panic in the emergency. The best hunting equipment and weapon include new rifles, rifle cases, powder, archery target, hunting arrows, etc. If the person is traveling alone for the hunting activity, a walkie-talkie or a cell phone is a must to contact somebody in the emergency situation. Hunting areas are usually surrounded with bushes and trees, so a marker tape can be used to track back if the hunter is lost. Hunting might go for many days, so adequate food and enough water can sustain the hunter for a long time. Since accidents, either minor or major, are most common during hunting, the hunter should carry handy first-aid boxes or medical kits as it provides immediate medical care.

A right kind of clothing is vital during the hunt as it gives complete protection against various weather conditions. The hunter should ensure bright clothing so that other hunters can differentia them from wildlife. Insects and poisonous plants are usual in hunting areas, so the hunters should have enough shelter blankets or clothes. Hunting equipment like life jackets, maps, flashlights, etc. are important while handling emergency situation. A full body hunting harness is the safe hunting equipment for many hunters. A hunting harness can save the life of the hunter if he/she has fallen asleep during the course of hunting.

Taking Homeschooling Outdoors

admin on Mar-31-2011

The saying All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy was not coined without any reason. Homeschooling a child is a whole new approach towards educating a child. Educating a child is a big responsibility. The main objective of homeschooling parents should be the all round development of a child, which will equip him/her to deal with the world, and enable him/her to carve his/her own identity in this competitive world. However, when parents homeschool their children, the dilemma often arises about how much time a child should spend studying within the confines of his/her study room.

Researchers have repeatedly stressed that all homeschooling need not take place at home. An academic experience can be gathered from anywhere in the world, and time and again it has been proved that educational adventures pursued in the real world opens up a childs mind more. Educational trips are one of the best ways of learning, because nature and personal experience of things are the greatest teachers. An outdoors educational experience also encourages parents to spend more time with their kids, which increases their confidence level.

Summer is a great time to take the homeschool outdoors in the form of camps or special hobby classes. Whatever means you choose to plan an outdoor educational endeavor, there is no doubt it will be a refreshing experience, both for the child and the parent. Parents who choose to homeschool are often criticized for depriving their children of the social experiences in regular schools, i.e. making friends and an all-round learning approach. Taking homeschool outdoors can be an answer to that.

A child can be homeschooled and still attend other classes, like judo or music lessons, and thus be a part of a social group of his/her own age. A child can be homeschooled and also be a part of community gatherings and hence be in touch with a large number of people. The best thing about homeschooling is that it is up to the child and parents to decide his/her academic pursuits and social involvement level. It goes without saying that parents want their children to have complete development, and they are also aware that a childs mind needs to be refreshed regularly. Plus, parents also know that it is important for their children to interact with their own peer group, so that they can fit into society when they grow up. Thus, to think that a childs social adequacy will suffer because of homeschooling is baseless.

There are many educational academies and organizations that organize various camps to assist homeschooling parents in planning their outdoor educational excursions. These outdoor camps deal with different aspects of education. While some involve children in scientific tasks dealing with nature, others include drawing and painting classes. The outdoor camps can be as long as a week or just for a day. But, all of them, apart from imparting interesting lessons, also teach children the 3 Cs – Communication, Cooperation and Commitment – which are the basic elements for leading an ideal social life. Parents usually do not accompany their kids on camps, unless they themselves lead it. Camping also teaches children how to keep their surroundings clean and the common etiquettes of eating, setting the table etc.

It is not necessary that parents wait until the summer for an outdoor teaching experience. They can homeschool outdoors on a seasonal basis, or even on a daily basis. For example, during the spring season, parents can take their child to the nearby woods to show the seasonal flora and fauna, or they can go on a daily walk together discussing about anything that interests them. Homeschooling that includes large doses of experiences outdoors will give children all they require for all round development.

Big Game Fishing on the East African Coastline

admin on Mar-31-2011

Some of the most exhilarating and challenging deep-sea fishing is available in the blue waters of Shimoni. But you have a better chance of catching a Striped Marlin from the Pemba Channel than anywhere else in the world. Traditionally when the Kaskazi (north east monsoon) blows, the billfish arrive in great numbers. There are two very definite seasons, the Yellowfin Tuna season, which runs from August through to the end of October, and the Marlin season, which runs from December to mid March.

The different types of fish and their seasons throughout the year.

Billfish

The Pemba channel provides us with six species of billfish including Black, Blue and Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Broadbill Swordfish and the elusive Shortbill Spearfish, so your chances of catching a grand slam (1 each of any 3 billfish in one day) are very high and real.

Striped Marlin:

Striped Marlins are the most prolific of the Marlin and they seasonally migrate through the natural corridor that lies between Pemba Island and the mainland. The Striped Marlin is well known for its fighting ability and is renowned for its speed and acrobatic displays. It has a reputation for spending more time in the air than in the water just after it is hooked. In addition to long runs and tail walks, it will ‘greyhound’ across the surface, making a dozen or more long, graceful leaps. Compared to a Blue or a Black it is considerably more slender and is the most colourful of all Marlin. Just before striking or when the Striped Marlin is annoyed, fourteen iridescent blue lines spark up the Marlin’s body. It is one of those must see moments – a Striped Marlin lighting up to strike one of your baits.

The Striped Marlin fishing Season: – The prime Marlin season runs from mid November to end of March. In March it would seem that the fish are much larger than average.

Black Marlin:

A highly rated game fish, the Black Marlin has the power, size and persistence of which anglers dream! This Marlin has tremendous power, and is known for its long runs and tail walking. Black Marlins in Kenyan waters are generally larger than the other Marlin and have short, heavy bodies with the fins virtually locked in position. The Black Marlin is noted as a violent feeder at the top of the food chain and feeds on other game fish and small baitfish.

The Black Marlin fishing Season: – During August to the end of October, large Blacks can be found amongst the Tuna. The prime Marlin season runs from mid November to end of March.

Blue Marlin:

The Blue Marlin is the largest of the Marlin family. It is a more streamlined version of the Black Marlin. It has along slender bill extending up to a virtual point on the top of the head where the dorsal fin slants, resulting in a huge speed take off compared to other Marlin. The Blue is a powerful aggressive fighter, known for its impressive athletic abilities on the surface, clearing the water time and time again. They run hard and long, and leap high into the air in a seemingly inexhaustible display of strength, although they are prone to going deep to conserve their energy.

The Blue Marlin Fishing Season: – During August to end October large Blue Marlins can be found amongst the Tuna. Blues and Blacks follow, and gorge on, the shoals of Yellow fin Tuna at this time of the year and are usually fatter than later in the season.

Broadbill:

Broadbill (Xiphias gladius) is known as the ‘Gladiator of the Sea’ due to its reputation of being the toughest of all the billfish with a violent mood, and is considered by many to be the toughest of all billfish to catch – the ultimate challenge in big game fishing. Characteristically, it has a smooth, very broad, flattened sword (broadbill) that is significantly longer and wider than the bill of any other billfish. It has considerable big blue eyes, and is a ferocious night feeder. They are deep-water predators and are known to go to depths of at least 550m. They are finicky, easily frightened and rarely strike blindly. The Pemba Channel is perhaps one of the premier destinations for Broadbill fishing. Broadbill fishing is conducted at night.

Broadbill Fishing Season:: – All year but best in October, November and March when the seas are very calm. December before the wind goes round to the northeast can also be an excellent time for Broadbill fishing.

Sailfish:

The Sailfish is one of the most colourful game fish of all – its outstanding feature is the long, high first dorsal which is slate or cobalt blue with a scattering of black spots. Its body is dark blue and silver and lights up with white dots and lines of electric blue. It is a very acrobatic fish and will dive quicker than the marlin because of its size and surrounds. They are a migratory species usually traveling alone or in small groups. It’s fighting ability and spectacular aerial acrobatics endear the Sailfish to the saltwater angler, but it tires quickly and is considered a light tackle species.

Sailfish Fishing Season: – Are seen and caught throughout the fishing season but most prolific during December and January.

Shortbill Spearfish:

This elusive game fish does exist in the waters of the Pemba Channel, but is infrequently encountered and rarely seen and caught. It is a highly migratory deep-water species feeding at or near the surface on medium-sized fish, including Dorado, Flying Fish and Pilot Fish, Squid and Crustaceans. They appear to be available all year in small numbers.

Shortbill Spearfish Fishing Season: – Mid November to end of March with December being the best month.

Tuna:

From August we start to see large numbers of migrating Yellowfin Tuna, which are, one of the strongest fish that swim and can put up a challenging fight. They make transoceanic journeys on a regular basis. Tuna school primarily by size and 12 – 20lb outfits are ideal for schools of small Tuna that run in the season, providing really good sport for the light tackle enthusiast. August to October provides excellent sport for Tuna. Multiple hook ups are normal when the ocean can come alive with huge schools in pursuit of smaller fish creating plenty of excitement

Tuna Fishing season: – Typically from August to end October. This is an excellent time for Tuna. Blue and Black Marlins follow and gorge on the shoals of Yellowfin Tuna at this time of year and are usually fatter than later in the season.

Tiger Shark:

Born at a size of 50 – 75 centimetres long with a beautiful silvery pattern of leopard-like spots, which change to bars as they grow and fade as they mature. The head is large and blocky with big soulful eyes. Mature Tiger Sharks become very stout. They may be resident in certain areas, but in general they are wanderers. They tend to stay in deeper water by day and enter shallow waters at night.

Mako Shark:

Mako Shark are torpedo shaped and are the speed kings of the cartilaginous fish and possibly the fastest fish in the ocean – measurements as high as 100kph (60mph) have been reported. When hooked they may jump to a height of several body lengths out of the water. They are able to chase down and consume fast moving pelagic, such as Tuna and Broadbill. Their ability to reach such phenomenal speeds may be attributed to a blood vessel heat exchange system, which enables them to maintain a body temperature

All sharks are an endangered species and their tag and release is actively promoted.

What should I start hunting as a beginner?

admin on Mar-29-2011

Okay I’m 14 and my dad and I are going to start hunting. My dad has little expirience with hunting and doesnt know what guns we should start off with and what we should start hunting. I have almost no expirence with hunting but guns I have expirence. I have had bb and pellet guns from when I was 5 until now. I have shot a 9mm, .357 mag, 410 shotgun, and a .22lr. What guns should we get and what should we start off hunting?

I am a Certified Alaskan Hunter Safety Instructor.

It all depends on what state you live in………. you need to add this information to your question.

There is allot more to hunting than guns and shooting. You need to have a hunting license, know what seasons are open, know what a legal animal looks like, what a protected animal looks like, find land that you can legally hunt on, be knowledgable about safety – and – what to do with the animal after you harvest it. No sense killing something you have no clue how to properly care for after shooting. You need to know how to clean it, store it, and cook it.

There is nothing more frustrating than spending a day in the woods and seeing nothing………… other than spending a whole day in the woods, seeing only one good game animal, and missing the shot.

The two things you need to concentrate on – finding game, and, being a decent marksman. Most folks practice their shooting skills when hunting season is closed……… but do not practice their finding game skills until the season is open. Waiting for the season to open to start looking for animals can waste valuable time. For this reasone – I highly recommend you and your dad go out with a digital camera when the season is closed – learn where the animals are – and hunt them with a camera. You will gain valuable knowledge and insight doing this in the spring and summer – it will be a huge help when fall comes around.

Hope this helps

What does fishing is limited to rainbow trout and brown trout mean?

admin on Mar-29-2011

Fishing is limited to rainbow trout and brown trout.

Does that that you can only fish rainbow and brown trout?
Or does it mean that you cannot fish rainbow and brown trout or maybe you can but not a lot, but you can fish other fish?

Taken correctly, you can can drag up rubber boots all day, but rainbow trout and brown trout are the only species of fish that you are allowed to catch and take home. Anything else that you catch must be removed from the line and be put back into the water.

Great Outdoors Gift Ideas for Kids

admin on Mar-28-2011

There’s an epidemic sweeping the world in today’s technologically enhanced world. And it is affecting our children at an alarming rate.

Kids just do not get outdoors anymore. The Nature Conservancy and other organizations have produced studies that show that all of us, and especially children, are drastically reducing the amount of time spent with outside activities in favor of television, movies, Net surfing and video games.

A Kaiser Family Foundation study said that children spend 6.5 hours of quality time daily with electronic equipment. Another study put children aged 6 to 11 in front of the TV or a computer screen 30 hours a week on average.

While some time with electronic gadgets isn’t so bad, consider this: if children do not make a connection with nature at an early age, they may never do so. And that is a frightening fact that can have major implications for our environment as the younger set grows into adulthood.

There is no denying that a Wii, Playstation or cool cell phone will certainly be drooled over gifts this Christmas, but it might be a good idea to balance those desires with gifts designed to get children introduced to the outdoors. Here are a few ideas to jump start that thinking:

Something with wheels. A new bike, rollerblades, scooter, skateboard, wheeled shoes. The outdoors doesn’t have to be the deep woods or a quiet pasture. Cruising down the sidewalk or up the road is a good start.

Binoculars. A good set is not very expensive and opens up a new world outside.

Telescope. Also fairly inexpensive for a starter set and one look at the surface of the Moon, the rings of Saturn or Jupiter’s moons may just be enough to get them interested for a long time to come.

Fishing rod and some tackle. Fishing gear comes in all different sizes, even kid-sized. Throw in some tackle, lures and a box to hold it all and you could introduce those children to a lifelong passion.

Kites. Name your price range and you are likely to find a kite to match. Remember how much fun it was to catch a breeze running and feel the tug of the wind on your string? What child could resist?

Night vision goggles. Believe it or not, they are available for under fifty bucks at some large department stores and they let kids see up to fifty feet in total darkness. How awesome is that?

A sled. It won’t take much snow to make a sled go. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and there are few kids on the planet who wouldn’t jump at the chance to fly down a hill on a sled.

Inexpensive digital camera. Some of the lower megapixel models have gotten very affordable as higher end models saturate the market. It’s an electronic device, but one that can be used outside to capture all kinds of bugs, birds, or maybe you sledding down a hill. All right, so they will have to upload the pictures to MySpace or Facebook later on, but at least they spent time outside taking the shots.

A canteen. Hiking, biking or just walking to a friend’s house can work up a thirst and it’s good to stay hydrated.

Backpack. Great for stuffing a take along lunch, snacks and gear for a long hike outdoors.

Net and a bug jar. For the younger ones, but a great way for kids to find out about bugs and stuff.

So put down the remote, turn off the computer, step away from the couch and get outdoors. Explore. Breathe. Relax. And feel good about introducing children to nature and to their own backyards.

Dog Breeds for Hunting Rabbits and the Beagle Dog Breed

admin on Mar-28-2011

The best dog breeds for hunting rabbits are any member of the hunting dog group with a good nose for scenting game and a willingness and ability to follow a scent trail without becoming distracted. If you are not sure which dog breeds are classified as gun dogs, we recommend that you go to one of the Kennel Club web sites such as the American Kennel Club, the United Kingdom Kennel Club or the Canadian Kennel Club. On each of these sites they hold lists of the breeds recognized within the category for your information.

Before we start to talk on this subject we would like to remind all US hunters that when using shotguns are only federally approved nontoxic shot is allowed. Always obtain appropriate landowner and/or tenant permission to shoot, and the always observe the shooting season which may apply within the region.

Rabbit hunting can be enjoyable and becomes an essential duty when rabbit numbers on any land holding exceed sensible numbers, plus it isn\’t a complicated sport. It can really be as simple as a quiet walk with any of the dog breeds for hunting rabbits, your old single-shot and a pocketful of shells. With rabbit hunting is also going to have to be a bit of luck if you are in the right place and the bunny will run by you. Assuming you know what you are doing there will be rabbits around you, and it is the dog that should be able to sniff them out where, hopefully they are lying low away from their burrows.

By the way, apart from potentially bagging some rabbit for the pot, rabbit hunting is also a good way to introduce new hunters or youngsters to the outdoors. Rabbit hunting is a fairly safe sport. However, it is imperative that to remain a safe sport that certain safety rules be adhered to without exception. Make sure you know those rules before you start.

Now here is a tip. Dog breeds for hunting rabbits and humans both miss rabbits which are holding tight (playing dead) in their hidden position even when in close proximity. Moving more slowly and performing a more thorough search of the area is the best tactic and in the end is likely to flush a rabbit and provide a shot. Dogs are helpful if you have them, but not entirely necessary. You\’ll probably see more rabbits with them, than without, but depending on the dog, you may not be able to take shots if the dog is too close. Hunting accident statistics clearly indicate that most accidents occur as a result of mistaking another hunter for game.

When did rabbit hunting with selected dog breeds for hunting rabbits first start? Dogs of this type were taken to Rome and may have been imported to Roman Britain. Small hounds are mentioned in the Forest Laws of Canute which exempted them from the ordinance which commanded that all dogs capable of running down a stag should have one foot mutilated.

Where are the rabbits most likely to be found? The best advice is to seek out either evergreen bushes or other vegetation that forms thick enough tangles to provide significant cover, even without its foliage.

The rabbit hunting seasons open in some countries on the first of September and runs through to the end of March allowing seven months of rabbit hunting.

Of all the dog breeds for hunting rabbits Beagles are specially trained hounds that rely exclusively on their smell to chase and kill rabbits, and bringing a pack along with you on your hunting sessions will surely make a difference. However, no pack of beagles, no matter how well trained and experienced, will do the whole hunt because you, as hunter, have to play your essential role in the final success.

The Beagle is a popular family pet as they are known for their affection and loyalty. They can be good playmates for children and get along well with other pets and younger puppies Bred for their independence, the Beagle should not be allowed off-leash because they have a tendency to wander.

The Beagle is a small scent hound, bred to track rabbit and hare while the hunter follows on foot. They are short coated and usually a sturdy little hound. The Beagle is considered one of the oldest breeds in history and perhaps one of the closest original breeds of hound. The breed\’s popularity further increased during the reign of his daughter, Elizabeth I.

Fishing: a Cool Thing to Do in the Outdoors

admin on Mar-28-2011

If you like outdoors, especially shallow or deep waters, fishing could be one hobby you might contemplate. Of late, the hobby is becoming expensive, with the costs of rods, lines, hooks and tackles going up. Add to that the costs of booking a fine fishing holiday at a decent location. Fishing, angling, trawling, trapping, etc are all techniques of various kinds. The most usual technique that hobbyists seek is angling.

Fresh water fishing is the most sought after hobby of holiday seekers. People who don’t have this emotional attachment to fishing might think it a waste to visit other countries solely for the purpose of fishing –anglers know better. They spend much time, money and effort to catch a special fish – either edible or inedible. Whatever you look for – an exotic species, the heaviest catch or fishing at the most celebrated fishing locations, the choices are endless. You still have thousands of lakes and rivers not fished, even if you spend your whole life fishing in a new location every day – although it can bore you to death.

Trout fishing, fly fishing, bass fishing, ice fishing, carp fishing, game fishing, catch and release fishing, salt water fly fishing, kayak sport fishing, the choices for an engaging holiday are endless. You can just go fishing on yourself or compete against other anglers, on the race to the longest or heaviest fish. Or maybe you go open seas, hunting for tuna, sharks, mackerel, etc with your big game fishing competition and adventures. Maybe you take the fish home for a delicious meal of give it away for others in case you don’t want to eat your catch.

Fishing locations are usually recognised by local authorities and you should be knowledgeable about the locations where you can fish. Before going fishing, you should also get a clear idea about the restrictions you have – including the maximum fish (by weight) one can catch in a day and the restrictions to catch a specific species. Strictly following the guidelines is important, as you don’t want uncomfortable and unwanted moments later.

Fish species data, rivers and streams, fishing forecasts and fishing reports are also published on a regular basis by the organizations and travel agents that offer fishing holidays. If looking for salt water fishing, you might also take a look at the tide charts and forecasts. It is not just about getting the forecasts and guidelines – it is also about application of the information to ensure a memorable fishing experience. You can spend the whole time without a single fish or can get more than you are legally allowed to catch in a matter of 30 minutes. It is not always about the techniques you use – it is also (sometimes) about the luck you have.

Fishing holidays can always guarantee you some good time, enjoying the freshness of nature and the thrills of chasing a dream. Let fishing be in your itinerary, in the next vacation you are planning.

What do babies born in winter wear for outdoors and indoors?

admin on Mar-27-2011

I am due in Jan, 2009. I am wondering what kind of clothes are warm enough for babies indoors and outdoors.

Will the onesies do for indoors, or does the baby need more? Should the baby be dressed in multiple layers for outdoors. How much will be too warm for the baby?

Thanks!

My daughter (December baby) mostly wore sleepers indoors. But go by the temperature of your house. If you keep it warm, she may well be comfortable in a onesie.

For outside, remember that you can’t have a lot of thick clothing in the carseat, so layers are good idea. A warm bunting for outside, and a lighter/thinner jacket for the carseat.
